[388] !BIRTH-PARENTS: From Family Bible, in possession of John William Crowe, 461
461 Tollview Dr, Shepherdsville, KY 40165.

[389] !DEATH-PLACE: Death certificate in possession of Gladys M. Crowe Gerding, St.
Louis, MO.Education: Boston, KY, Petersburg School and High School. Then to

[390] !EDUCATION; Boston, Nelson Co, KY, Petersburg School and High School. Then to
Bryant & Stratton Business College in Louisvile, Jefferson, KY, where he
graduated in Accounting. He then got a job as clerk in the Boston, KY bank. In
1910 the doctor advised his father that he better get his son out of the bank
and in a job outdoors or he was going to lose him. (Dad did not tell us that
his older sister, Margaret, had died a few years earlier from tuberculosis. I
found the article in the Bardstown paper about her death. GMG.)
So he gave up his position at the bank and got a job on the railroad. He went
to work for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad as a Fireman in Jun 1910, then
as a brakeman until Jan 1912. I do not know what he did then until 1915
except that he worked for someone who owned race horses and he went to Canada
for several months in 1915. When he came back, he got a job with Chicago &
Alton Railroad as a Brakeman in Oct l915 in Road Service from Slater, MO to
Kansas City, MO. Then he got a job with the Illinois Central Railroad in Jan
1916 where he worked as brakeman and Conductor from Jan 1916 to Jan 1920 in
Road Service in Centralia, Marion, IL Jan 1920 he started working for East St.
Louis and Suburban as a streetcar motorman. Worked for them until Jul 1932 and
the streetcar lines were discontinued. After this, he tried to get back on the
railroad, but jobs were very scarce during the recession. Worked for the
Litchfield & Madison RR for a couple of months. Finally got back on RR for the
Missouri Pacific, in the Terminal RR Division, in E. St. Louis, IL in the late
'30's when the war was on the horizon. He worked for them as a switchman until
he retired. I don't know how he kept our family going during the depression
after the streetcars went off. He did any kind of job that he could find--he
hung wallpaper for several people--I remember going with him and helping him
during the summer. He was offered the job of sextan at our church--First
Presbyterian Church in Collinsville, so he did that for over a year, I think.
He also worked for Dr. Louis Kraft by keeping the boiler stoked with coal in
his building on East Main Street. During this time a man who used to work
for the streetcar line too, had some farm land down on Collinsville Rd
across from Fairmount Race Track, didn't have any money to buy seed and Dad
bought corn for him to plant and he took care of it and shared the corn with
us. That summer we had so much corn, we canned it, made some corn relish, and
Dad had his own garden with lots of beans, tomatoes, etc. so that we ate well.
Then at a church supper when he was helping at the church, Mr. Walter
Fischer offered him a job--to try to collect overdue bills for him--for
plumbing, but mostly for farm machinery that he sold. Then Dad also
learned a lot about the John Deere Farm Machinery and helped the plumbers
deliver bathtubs, etc. He worked for him until he got back on the railroad.
I have newspaper clipping that he had saved (but no year on it) from the
Bardstown Standard. Reads: "Boston School Closed. The commencement exercises
of the Boston graded school, of which Prof. Hancock is Principal, closed
Thursday, May 19. There were two graduates, Messrs. Owen Daugherty and Owen
Fryrear, both of whom were awarded diplomas. The following pupils were awarded
gold medals: Misses Katie Troutman, Elnora Arnold, Messrs. Ed Crowe, Owen
Daugherty and Owen Fryrear. Prof. Hancock will have charge of the school again
next year."

[391] !MARRIAGE; Have copy of Application for license for the marriage from Clark
County, IN, 5 Jul 1915, and certified copy of Marriage License and Certificate,
Clark Co, IN, on 5 Jul 1915 married by Frank Ogden.

[392] !NEWSPAPER CLIPPING; Article from newspaper in Ft. Lauderdale, FL: "Edward R.
Crow, 88 of 1236 NE 16th Gerrace, Fort lauderdale, passed away Saturday,
Oct 16.Article from newspaper in Ft. Lauderdale FL: "Edward R. Crow, 88, of 1236
NE 16th Terrace, Fort Lauderdale, passed away Saturday, October 16. Resident
12 years from Collinsville, Illinois. Survived by two daughters Mrs. Claude
(Norma) Ward of Coral Springs, Fla, Mrs. Gladys Gerding of Collinsville,
Illinois, three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services and
interment to take place in Collinsville, Illinois. Arrangements by Becker
Funeral Home, 3444 South Federal Highway, Deerfield Beach."

[393] !MILITARY: None. Have Registration Certificate #49, for World War I, Edward
Roy Crow, Centralia, Precinct 2nd, County Marion, State Illinois registered 5th
of June 1917, signed by O. B. Kurth. Have Notice of Classification from Local
Board for Marion Co, Class IV A, "Edward Roy Crow Order No. 2903 Serial No. 708
has been placed in Class four. 1/21/18 Signed by H. R. Hall, Memb er of Local
Board." Also have Registration Certificate for Edward Roy Crowe, 930 St. Louis
Road, Collinsville, IL, has been duly registered this 27 day of April, 1942,
signed Mrs. A. Goodall, Jr, Registrar for Local Board 3, Collinsville, IL.
(for World War II). There is a description on the back as follows: Race,.
white; height, 5'10-1/2"; Eyes, blue; Hair, red; Complexion, Light, other
physical characteristics, none. He weighed about 165 most of the time. I
guess it was because he was quite active. Always had a garden to work in, and
as long as he worked on the railroad, he was climbing up and down on moving
cars and walking in between them, taking down the numbers of the cars and where
they were going so they knew what train to put them on.

[394] !LODGES; Member of Masonic Lodge in Collinsville, Madison Co, IL. He was a
member of Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen when he was working for railroads
early in life, then a member of Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric
Railway Employes of America until the streetcars stopped operation, then when
he went back to work for the railroad in 1942, he was again a member of
Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen until after retirement.

says "The Walthalls were for generations landowners in Chesterfield Co. In the
Bristol parish register we find the birth on 15 Sep 1730, of Mary the daughter

See a copy of THE WALTHALL FAMILY, A Genealogical History of the Descendants of
WM Walthall of VA, a book I found in LDS Library, Oct, 1992. 929.273, W172w.
She is the daughter of Richard Walthall and Mary Branch, d/o Christopher

Cicely Sherman and widow of John Crawley. Richard Walthall was the s/o Richard

was s/o William Walthall, the first of the name in America, b in London and
