!Lon Newman married her after his 1st wife had died. She was a practical
nurse. They moved to Houston, TX, from New Albany, IN, and were living at 5706
Chapman. On the night of April 18, 1948, she tried to wake her husband and
poured boiling water on him. He died on 21 Apr 1948. Per article in THE
HOUSTON PRESS, Mrs. Mabel Newman said she had lived for 37 years in Valley
Station, KY. She moved to New Albany to live with a sister after her
first husband was killed by an auto eight years ago, she said. She had 7 sons
and 4 daughters by her first husband. THE HOUSTON PRESS, Wed, 21 Apr 1948
said: An indictment charging murder was returned Wed by the grand jury against
Mrs. Mabel Newman, 65, of 5706 Chapman, in the death of her husband, A.S.
Newman, 67, who died at Jefferson Davis Hospital 21 Apr from burns he received
3 days earlier when boiling water was poured on him while he slept at home.
Mrs. Newman is in county jail. Dr. C. A. Dwyer, county psychiatrist, reported
that his examination of Mrs. Newman showed she was of unsound mind and not
responsible for her actions.
However, District Attorney A.C. Winborn has ruled that under Texas law, Mrs.
Newman's trial must proceed.
