[1768] !From The Descendants of James Shirley of Culpeper Co, VA, as found in the
Filson Club, Louisville, KY, Jun 1991. See Copy in my Blue BKB.
He and Thomas were twins. Both bachelors and lived together. Most of these
Shirley records came from suit papers in the Circuit Court of Madison Co, VA to
determine the disposition of the estate of his twin brother, Thomas, who died
intestate in Jul 1845. He and his brother between them amassed a fortune in
land and slaves. A tax record, for instance, shows holdings of 48,933 acres
(over 75 sq. mi.) in Madison County alone and a division of the slaves in 1853
listed over 100 of them by name and value.

[284] !Aaron served w/his father in King Philip's War in 1675, and like him received
a grant of land in Voluntown, though it is believed that neither of them ever
lived in that town. Hempstead's Diary, under date of 20 Nov 1720, mentions
Aaron Stark as having been appointed by Justice Avery with others to renew
bounds between William Denison and Joshua Hempstead. THE AARON STARK FAMILY,
by Charles R. Stark. All info about this family from this book. Copy in blue
BK B. (GMG) More information found in LDS Library, Salt Lake City, UT, Oct,
1992, in book JOB BALL STARK (1787-1845) and Wife, ELIZABETH GRAY (1793-1844),
by Marion Stark Craig, MD. It gives date of birth as 1650, date of death prior
to Mar 1706 at Groton, CN which had been cut out of New London in 1705. His
marriage to Mehitable SHAW on 27 November 1676 at New London, CN. See copy in
my BK F.

[285] !The Stark families of which I write descend from a still older immigrant
family. It appears that the Vernon Township Stark families descend from either
Aaron Stark, who settled in Groton, Conn. as early as 1653, or from James Stark
of Stafford County Virgina, who came from Scotland and died in Stafford Co.,
Va. in 1754.
Aaron Stark first settler of that name in Groton, Conn. in 1685...........
Tradition in the Groton Branch makes them of Scotch ancestory. In Scotland,
the family name is an old one. Aaron Stark fought in the Pequot War. Aaron's
son, William Stark, was instrumental in organizing the First Baptist Church in
Conn. in 1705. The first meeting was held in Williams house. THE STARK FAMILY
ASSOCIATION, North Plain Conn. has published a copy of the early history of the
Aaron Stark family. This association meets once a year and publishes a yearly
bulletin...
I will give you a brief history of the early Starks from whom most Starks in
Southern Indiana have descended. As early as 1784, six Stark brothers had
settled on Formans Creek in Nelson, Co., Ky. They were: (1) Jonathan Stark with
wife Margaret;(2) Chistopher Stark with wife Martha Vineyard; (3) James Stark
with wife Mary Howell;(4) Daniel Stark with wife Elizabeth Wells;(5) Joseph
Stark with wife Hanna; and (6)John Stark. These men were in Washington Co.,
Pa during the early part of the revolution.
Johathan was a Baptist preacher. Chistopher (my great, great grandfather),
James, and Daniel served in the Washington Co. Penn. Militia. These brothers
later settled in Shelby and Henry Counties, Ky. We know that old Chistopher
Stark and old Daniel were in Virginia as early as 1775, for their names appear
on the Virginia Militia Roll of soldiers paid off at Romney. With them served
Stephen Vineyard. Some genealogists claim that the Vineyard family came
directly to Virginia from England............
A land grant of 5000 acres was received by Bolling Stark in Jefferson County,
Ky. in 1783. Bolling Stark was a native of Prince William Co., Va. Jonathon,
Joseph, James, Daniel, Chistopher, and John all owned large tracts near each
other. It appears to me that these men stem from the Virginia Starks. (C E
Winkler's opinion. I, Gladys M. Gerding do not agree. The ones from VA came
into another part of KY.)
Jonathon, Christopher, James, Daniel, and Joseph all died in Ky. and from the
marriage bonds of their children, it is found distinguish among their
respective sets of children fairly well. There were many many intermarriages
among the children (cousin marriages) and this has caused some difficulty
since no distinction is made between sons and sons-in-law in the estate
settlements of the different families.
The youngest brother, John, later moved with the younger generation to Scott
County, Indiana and left a will naming 8 children...........(He then lists the
Indiana generations) (by Clifford E Winkler, a gr-grandson of my great
uncle Robt L Stark. This info he gave to the LDS Library in Salt Lake City, UT))
