[281] !Settled in CN. Volunteer in King Phillip's war. About 1665, he purchased a
farm near Groton, CN, and died there in 1685. His wife's name was Mehitibel
Shaw (Geneology of Connecticut Families pg 524) From Virgo County Historical
Society, The Aaron STARK Family. (CEW) (This is in error, per THE AARON STARK
FAMILY, by Charles R. Stark. Mehitibel Shaw was the wife of his son Aaron.
(Gladys M Gerding, 8-20-1992)
My great grandfather, Robert L. Stark, told me how the Starks were brought over
from Europe to England to fight in one of the English wars and were on the
losing side and were forced to flee in the night to Scotland. At the time of
this story (about 1934), I did not know what the line of descendency to
Scotland was. Clifford E. Winkler 4/10/1990.
Roy E. Hardin, Some notes on the early STARK families in Vernon Township,
Washington Township, Washington Co, IN--STARK surname file Kentucky Historical
Society Library, 1952--sent to WINKLER August 1991.
"STARK FAMILY BACKGROUND
The Stark families do not descend from General John Stark of New Hampshire
and Bennington fame of our family tree. Mr. Howard P. Moore of New York city
has written a complete genealogy of the General John Stark family that shows
this. The Stark families of which I write descend from a still older immigrant
family. It appears that the Vernon Township Stark families descend from either
Aaron Stark, who settled in Groton, Conn. as early as 1653, or from James Stark
of Stafford County Virgina, who came from Scotland and died in Stafford Co.,
Va. in 1754. (CEW)
Aaron Stark first settler of that name in Groton, Conn. in 1685...........
Tradition in the Groton Branch makes them of Scotch ancestory. In Scotland,
the family name is an old one. Aaron Stark fought in the Pequot War. Aaron's
son, William Stark, was instrumental in organizing the First Baptist Church in
Conn. in 1705. The first meeting was held in Williams house. THE STARK FAMILY
ASSOCIATION, North Plain Conn. has published a copy of the early history of the
Aaron Stark family. This association meets once a year and publishes a yearly
bulletin...
I will give you a brief history of the early Starks from whom most Starks in
Southern Indiana have descended. As early as 1784, six Stark brothers had
settled on Formans Creek in Nelson, Co., Ky. They were: (1) Jonathan Stark with
wife Margaret;(2) Chistopher Stark with wife Martha Vineyard; (3) James Stark
with wife Mary Howell;(4) Daniel Stark with wife Elizabeth Wells;(5) Joseph
Stark with wife Hanna; and (6)John Stark. These men were in Washington Co.,
Pa during the early part of the revolution.
Johathan was a Baptist preacher. Chistopher (my great, great grandfather),
James, and Daniel served in the Washington Co. Penn. Militia. These brothers
later settled in Shelby and Henry Counties, Ky. We know that old Chistopher
Stark and old Daniel were in Virginia as early as 1775, for their names appear
on the Virginia Militia Roll of soldiers paid off at Romney. With them served
Stephen Vineyard. Some genealogists claim that the Vineyard family came
directly to Virginia from England............
A land grant of 5000 acres was received by Bolling Stark in Jefferson County,
Ky. in 1783. Bolling Stark was a native of Prince William Co., Va. Jonathon,
Joseph, James, Daniel, Chistopher, and John all owned large tracts near each
other. It appears to me that these men stem from the Virginia Starks.
Jonathon, Christopher, James, Daniel, and Joseph all died in Ky. and from the
marriage bonds of their children, it is found distinguish among their
respective sets of children fairly well. There were many many intermarriages
among the children (cousin marriages) and this has caused some difficulty
since no distinction is made between sons and sons-in-law in the estate
settlements of the different families.
The youngest brother, John, later moved with the younger generation to Scott
County, Indiana and left a will naming 8 children...........(He then lists the
Indiana generations) (by CEW)
Additional information was found in LDS Library, Salt Lake City, UT, Oct 1992,
in a book JOB BALL STARK (1787-1845) and Wife, ELIZABETH GRAY (1793-1844), by
Marion Stark CRAIG, MD. (See copy in my BK F. GMG) Includes info of how they
have decided his date of birth from a deposition given on 11 June 1673
concerning his service in the Pequot War of 1637, when he stated he was then in
1673, "aged sixty five or thereabouts." However, someone searched it and said
it had been written over and could be forty five, fifty five or sixty five.
There is an interesting bit of information about his early "waywardness," as it
has been called. The old records of Hartford, CN reveal that in early 1639
Aaron STARK was hauled into court on a case of "unclean practices" with Mary
HOLT, A servant girl. They had been caught fornicating. Aaron was sentenced
to be whipped in public for the wrong done to Mary, and she was to be punished
"for concealing it so long," and "when both are fit for that condition to marry
her." There are no records showing if they were married.

[282] !UPDATE Nov 1995 by Gladys Gerding on trip to Salt Lake City, UT to do research
at the Family History Library. Book, THE GENEALOGY OF JOSHUA STARK, AN EARLY
SETTLER OF GRANVILLE, OHIO, compiled by Mary Belle Linnell, Oct 1964, #929.273
A1 #2593, also on Mfilm 875386, Item 3, she said the first known record of this
Aaron is in response to the call for troops, he enlisted under Capt. John Mason
of Windsor, CT, in the Pequot War of 1637. This company was composed of first
settlers of what is now Hartford, Windsor and Wethersfield. In 1675, under same
commander, he fought in King Philip's War and for each service was granted
land. He was in Hartford in 1639, in New London in 1655, and in Stonington in
1669 where he was made a feeman that year.
She shows his children from the book, THE AARON STARK FAMILY, by Charles R.
Stark, page 1, as shown on this family record. But quotes from the OLD
NORTHWEST GENEALOGICAL QUARTERLY Vol XII p. 196, that gave dau Margaret but not
Sarah, and the others the same.
