Cyril McGee, or Mayle, the oldest male resident of Franklin County, if
not the state, died suddenly at his home two miles north of Moira on the
Bombay road early Sunday morning, aged 106 years, says the Malone
Farmer. In the report of the last census the names of one or two ladies
older thanthis are given, but among the centenarians there recorded, not
a single male resident had attained so great an age as Mr. McGee. He was
born in Montreal in July, 1810, and for years was a river sailor on the
St. Lawrence. He came to this country shortly before the Civil War,
enlisting after he had reached the age of 50, and had an honorable record
as a soldier. Up toabout two years ago he was able to do a fair share of
the work of the farm on which he resided. Though his health had been
failing for about a year he still retained all his faculties and was
keenly interested to the day of his death in all that was transpiring
around him. Mr. McGee spoke both French and English fluently. He was a
constant smoker, but this seemed to have no bad effect on his health or
his longevity. He resided with his son Oliver who is over 70 years of
age. Besides his son, he leaves one daughter, who resides at St. Regis
Falls, and several grandchildren. The funeral was held from the Catholic
church at Brushton yesterday morning, under the auspices of H. L. Aldrich
G.A.R. Post, of which Mr. McGee was a member.
