[85] Notes from Pauline Deshaies
[86]
Joseph & Nancy lived at Raymondville, a small hamlet in the Town of
Norfolk. In 1850 they were living at Massena and by 1860 they disappear
as they do not show in any census in St. Lawrence County at that date.
It is possible they went to Canada during the early 1860's as many French
Canadian families did to avoid the Civil War. What is strange is there
is a military marker on their grave in the Raymondville cemetery. I
wrote to Washington asking for pension papers for Joseph, but they
couldn't find any. I didn't have any military information on him, such
as outfit he possibly served in, so maybe that is the reason they
couldn't find anything. And, it could be possible the marker is a
mistake.
